“Consciência Alada” is a work that suggests reflections on the relationships between the consciousnesses of humans, animals and artificial intelligences (AIs). Through the technique of voxels and AI, the installation is composed of complex images that provoke us to think about how the different forms of consciousness are influenced by the environment and the relationships we establish with other species. The work also highlights the importance of interspecies in art as a way to value the presence and importance of non-human animals on our planet. “Consciência Alada” invites the observers to transcend cultural borders and recognize the abundance and diversity of the different life forms we share. The work also aims to evoke the responsibility we have as a species towards the other beings that inhabit the planet along with us. The images generated by AI (Midjourney) experiment with visual interpretation from a textual description about a witnessed event, adding a poetic dimension to the work.

The work is composed of three images generated by the same AI (Midjourney) through the input “Sinestesia”. The artist translates the images to audio through another AI (Hugging Face) and, again, translates the images to text with another AI (NewOCR) thereby obtaining their names.

ChatGPT is a popular conversation robot with artificial intelligence, developed by the company OpenAI, which answers questions from its interlocutors by text. Mitomaniac is someone who lies compulsively in a pathological way. In turn, Mitômato (Mitomaniac + automaton) presents the result of a simple experiment with ChatGPT: repeatedly ask about the life and work of Brazilian artist Fabio FON, author of this experiment. The robot always tries to fulfill what was asked following the standards of artists’ biographies, however, most of the times it ends up mixing some inaccurate information with a lot of false information, even indicating works of other creators as if they had been created by FON. In this exhibition, the video presents the transcription of excerpts from conversations with ChatGPT, held between the months of February and March 2023, highlighting in drawing pins the excerpts with absolutely untrue content.

The proposal arises from the answers that the GPT Chat (an artificial intelligence that talks to humans answering all kinds of questions and performing various types of tasks) generates when talking to the artist about Brazil. Intending to test its knowledge about the country, the AI makes a critical analysis of Brazilian reality. If an Artificial Intelligence (AI) “thinks” the Brazilian reality in a depreciative way, that the “dreams are lost in a constant fog”, can we approximate this thought to the artistic vanguards of the 20th century, like the surrealists, who saw the dream as a possibility to overcome this reality? In “New old life”, we seek to explore hybrid experiments, more specifically experiments with AIs of various types, from text to image AIs to text to music AIs. The experiments using Open AIs cross over different creative scopes to originate a virtual installation that seeks to highlight the pains of contemporary life in Brazil from an AI’s point of view and through AIs.

The work “Street near your grandma’s house” is composed of two images, in which it is possible to see the representation of scenes of everyday life in a cluster. In the first image we see a man walking down a street with bags, and a multitude of houses in the background. On the second image we have a different view, a boy flying a kite on a slab. The two images, one next to the other, show us the aesthetics, and beyond the aesthetics, some affective perception generated by the identification or recognition of the represented environment.

The Manacá-de-Cheiro is a tree from the Solanaceae family which is native to the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil. The medium sized tree can reach a height of 3 metres, with a rounded crown of 2 metres in diameter, and is characterized by its small and permanent leaves. Its colourful and very perfumed flowers please all who come near it. Its popular name is Manacá-de-Cheiro and its scientific name is Brunfelsia uniflora. With oval and smooth leaves, the manacá flowers in September/October. During the blossoming season, the tree presents a very special colouring. The flowers start off purplish-blue, and as time goes by they lighten from pink to white. The tree attracts butterflies, one of them known as the Manacá Butterfly, which lays its eggs only on the leaves of this plant, which is the caterpillars’ only food. For butterfly enthusiasts, the tree is a reference of life. In this encounter between life, art and nature, the online version of the work appears in the media environment, as an emerging proposal, in which as butterflies, we approach and experience its growth, its development and its disappearance. The parameters of the work consider through an algorithm the position of the sun, its coloring characteristics, separated by three moments, until they disappear over time.

The work was developed from two platforms of artificial intelligence, Stable Diffusion and Wonder, which uses a series of words and phrases selected from the artist’s research on transhumanism. The intention of the work is to discuss the collective memory that is built on the hyperconnectivity of digital neural pathways, and this expansion of memory and articulation of images by artificial intelligence.
